Text from back cover of Australian Edition Read the first chapter of Becoming an Ally In particular, it lays out guidelines for becoming allies of oppressed peoples when we are in the role of oppressor. It attempts to answer such questions as: Has oppression always been with us, part of "human nature"? What does individual healing have to do with social justice? What does social justice have to do with individual healing? Why do members of the same oppressed group fight one another, sometimes more viciously than they fight their oppressors? Why do some who experience oppression develop a life-long commitment to fighting oppression, while others turn around and oppress others? What can we do to change oppression? The book looks for solutions by examining the process through which we come to recognize ourselves, first as people who have experienced oppression, then as members of oppressor groups. The book examines history, economic and political structures, and individual psychology looking for the roots of discrimination. A beautiful place to die / Malla Nunn Book Bib IDīook, Online - Google Books Now in the novel, “Rhino Ranch,” McMurtry gives his character a fitting farewell with a story of an old man trying to keep up with modern ways that he just doesn’t quite seem to understand. Readers first met the character Duane Moore in Larry McMurtry’s novel “The Last Picture Show.” Duane’s adventurous life was further documented in three more of McMurtry’s books - “Texasville,” “Duane’s Depressed,” and “When The Light Goes.” Most people know author Larry McMurtry for his novel “Lonesome Dove,” and the movies adapted from his novels, such as “Terms of Endearment” and “The Last Picture Show.” But my favorite among his work is his novels that continue the story of the folks from Thaila, Texas. But while the focus is on Shakespeare’s love life and how it relates to his plays, the novel also focuses on, by not mentioning the plays much, the ordinary life of an extraordinary genius.įrom the first page, you realize that Nothing Like the Sun is one of those novels a novel whose style takes a while to get used to. Naturally, Burgess spends considerable time on Shakespeare’s relationships with the Dark Lady and Fair Youth of Shakespeare’s sonnets, rendered here as Fatimah, a woman of color from the East Indies, and Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton. Nothing Like the Sun’s subtitle is A story of Shakespeare’s Love-life, and so it is–it follows Shakespeare, rendered here as WS, from a young man struck by the image of a dark goddess to an man wasting away from syphilis. When I came back from fall break and realized I hadn’t even started it yet (it was either that or my economics textbook, people!), I picked it up without much ceremony or knowing much about it–I knew Burgess wrote A Clockwork Orange, which I’ll probably never read, and that it, in some fashion, dealt with race and Shakespeare. Naturally, in my Race in Shakespeare class, we read a lot of plays, but there is one novel on the syllabus–Anthony Burgess’ Nothing Like the Sun.
